- People who have low calcium intake throughout life are more likely to suffer from osteoporosis, and have a higher chance of breaking bones. (Osteoporosis Canada, 2010, 2014; Health Canada, 2018).
- Experts recommend getting calcium from food first, rather than supplements.
- Getting enough calcium from food can also indicate a healthy diet in general (Rafferty and others, 2011), and calcium is a key nutrient in the DASH—Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension—diet (Sacks and others, 2001)
